Ports, Bridges, Terminals –
Engineering at the Edge of Land and Sea
Where the solid certainty of
land gives way to the restless movement of water, human ingenuity builds its
boldest dreams. Along the world’s coasts, engineers and architects have shaped
the threshold between elements — places where commerce meets adventure, and
structure meets the shifting tide. From ancient harbours
of stone to sleek modern terminals of glass and steel, these works stand as
monuments to our desire to connect, to cross, to anchor. Each one tells a story
— of necessity, of vision, and of the eternal dialogue between land and sea.

Jetty
https://www.swakop.com/Swakopmund-Architecture-album/slides/TheJetty.html
The historic jetty in
Swakopmund is one of the town’s most outstanding beach side features. It’s a
hit with fishermen trying to reap rich harvests from the Atlantic Ocean and
pedestrians wanting to admire the ocean from close up. A History of the Jetty -
The jetty was first constructed between 1904 and 1905 by a team of 60 men from
the German Eisenbahn-Baukompagnie. It was built to
make up for the inefficiencies of the original Mole which proved inefficient as
a harbour. The jetty was originally made of wood and
was intended for use as a loading and offloading platform for cargo ships. It
measured 275m long by 9m wide. These dimensions soon proved inadequate for the
task at hand and the jetty was lengthened by 50m and widened by 5m during 1907.
The wooden construction was unable to withstand the harsh climate of the
Atlantic Coast and the ravaging of spring tides, and so in 1912, it was decided
to rebuild the jetty out of steel. The original drill bits from this operation
are still on display at the entry to the jetty.’ World War I put a stop to the
construction almost as soon as it had begun, and the jetty remained unfinished,
used only as a fishing platform and a place for romantic seaside strolls. By
1983, the jetty had disintegrated into a dangerous state and was closed to the
public. Locals and tourists alike wanted their jetty back and began a massive fundraising
campaign to restore the site to its former glory. In 2005 construction began
and the new Jetty was opened on 6 October 2006...

Great Barrier
rescue among Defence recognition awards
https://www.nzdf.mil.nz/media-centre/news/great-barrier-rescue/
The four Royal New Zealand
Navy personnel who rescued a stricken yachtsman in atrocious conditions during
Cyclone Gabrielle have been recognised by the New
Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) for their bravery and
skills.
The coxswain of the Rigid
Hulled Inflatable Boat (RHIB), Petty Officer Leon Reilly, has earned the Defence Meritorious Service Medal (DMSM), while divers
Petty Officer Te Pumautanga
Campbell, Leading Diver Israel Davis and Able Seaman Ashlea Farrar, who was the
bowman, were awarded Chief of Defence Force
Commendations for their part in the rescue.
In all, two DMSMs and eight
CDF Commendations were awarded this month, recognising
exceptional service across the NZDF.
In February, HMNZS Te Mana was called on to help with the rescue of a solo
yachtsman east of Great Barrier Island when the rough conditions prevented the
Northland Rescue Helicopter from carrying out the rescue utilising
their rescue winch.
Petty Officer Reilly was
summoned to Te Mana’s bridge and after a discussion
between the Captain and the Northland Rescue Helicopter, which resulted in a
request for Te Mana to undertake the rescue as
conditions were too dangerous for the helicopter. The captain asked him if he
was happy to coxswain the RHIB.
Petty Officer Reilly said he
had never encountered sea conditions like that in a RHIB before.
“The sea was like a washing
machine. There was no consistency in the waves, they were all over the place.
“The sea spray was probably
the hardest part of it because you can’t breathe as soon as the water hits your
face and mouth.”
Piloting the RHIB to the yacht
was also a test, with Petty Officer Reilly sometimes having to take direction
from the rescue helicopter as he couldn’t see where the yacht was at times.
“It felt like a game of forceback. You’d gain ground but then some waves were too
big. At times I had the boat under full
power but it was still going backwards.”
Petty Officer Reilly was
trying to safely get the RHIB in close to the yacht when the crew realised the yachtie was in the water and they were able to
pull him aboard.
The trip back to Te Mana was no easier and the waves meant the RHIB was
airborne at times.
Thirty-four-year-old Petty
Officer Reilly, from Rotorua, and who enlisted in 2006 and was named Sailor of
the Year in 2014, said he was grateful and proud to be awarded the DMSM.
At the time, Petty Officer
Reilly’s partner Steph was five months pregnant with their first child, River
Jay Reilly.

safety and family to one side...

Air travel faces major cutbacks as shutdown strains FAA workforce
U.S. Transportation Secretary
Sean Duffy has warned that a wave of flight cancellations could soon disrupt
travel across the United States, as the ongoing government shutdown continues
to push the aviation system to breaking point.
Starting Friday, the Federal
Aviation Administration (FAA) will begin cutting air traffic capacity at 40 of
the nation’s busiest airports—by as much as 10%—to protect safety standards
amid mounting staff fatigue. The reductions will roll out gradually, beginning
with 4% of flights on Friday and climbing to the full 10% next week. That could
mean between 3,500 and 4,000 flights cancelled daily.

The United States is working
to modernize its nuclear strategic nuclear forces, Russian Defense Minister
Andrey Belousov said. "Work is underway on a promising strategic nuclear
submarine, the Columbia, to replace the Ohio. A new heavy bomber, the B-21
Raider, is being developed. A cruise missile with a nuclear warhead is being
developed, and that’s not all. The demothballing of
56 launchers on 14 Ohio-class submarines is planned. I would like to emphasize demothballing. They are being fully loaded with Trident II
ballistic missiles. Preparatory work is underway to convert 30 B-52H strategic
bombers back into nuclear weapons carriers," Belousov said at a meeting
headed by President Vladimir Putin with permanent members of the Russian
Security Council.

Democrats
sweep U.S. elections
https://dailytelegraph.co.nz/news/democrats-sweep-u-s-elections/
In a political upset shaking
both Wall Street and Washington, 34-year-old democratic socialist Zohran
Mamdani has been elected mayor of New York City, becoming the city’s first
Muslim leader and one of the youngest mayors in its history. His victory, part
of a nationwide wave of Democratic wins, marks a dramatic far-leftward shift in
America’s biggest city and sends ripples through the national political
landscape. Mamdani, who immigrated from Uganda as a child and represents a
district in Queens, defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis
Sliwa with just over 50 percent of the vote — a result declared within minutes
of polls closing. The contest drew the city’s highest turnout in more than half
a century, with more than two million ballots cast...

Global
Warming?
Parts
of Antarctica have been cooling since 2003!
https://report24.news/globale-erwaermung-teile-der-antarktis-kuehlen-seit-2003-ab/
We're all familiar with the
headlines claiming that, strangely enough, every region of the Earth is
"warming faster" than others. However, a recent study based on actual
measurement data shows that parts of Antarctica have cooled by more than two
degrees Celsius since 2003. There is also no overall warming trend. A recent
study on temperature trends in Antarctica reveals what happens when you follow
real measurement data instead of blindly trusting flawed models. While climate
change models predict rising temperatures and melting ice masses, the data from
actual temperature measurements paints a completely different picture...

Deforestation,
Jets & Cruise Ships:
The
Shameless Hypocrisy of the COP30 Rulers
So when 60,000 people fly into
Belém for the COP30 climate conference, the air will reek not of "saving
the Earth" and sustainability, but of kerosene, diesel, and hypocrisy.
While the high priests of resource conservation preach to us that we should fly
less, eat no meat, and scrap our cars, they themselves are jetting in hordes,
thousands of them in private jets, as reported by the KRONE. The rest fly
commercial, of course, naturally "climate neutral," at least
according to the booking form. Destruction in the name of climate protection –
Brazil's government recklessly built a 13-kilometer, four-lane highway called
Avenida Liberdade through intact and protected rainforest, all to facilitate
the transport of the approximately 60,000 conference participants who portray
themselves as saviors of the planet. This project, planned since 2012 and
repeatedly put on hold due to legitimate environmental concerns, received
approval in 2023 to be ready in time for COP30. Satellite images from 2025
mercilessly reveal the extent of deforestation along the route...

Deep beneath our feet,
scientists have discovered a vast underground ocean containing three times more
water than all of Earth's oceans combined. This discovery, located 400 miles
below the Earth's surface, challenges everything we thought we knew about our
planet's water systems. The water is trapped in a special mineral called
ringwoodite, which acts like a sponge, absorbing water and storing it under
extreme pressure...

MOSCOW/KYIV, Nov 2 (Reuters) –
A Ukrainian drone attack struck one of Russia’s main Black Sea oil ports on
Sunday, causing a fire and damaging at least one ship, as Kyiv tries to
undermine Russia’s war effort by targeting its energy infrastructure. Ukraine
has for several months been striking Russian oil refineries, depots and
pipelines in a bid to undermine the Russian economy. Footage on Russian and
Ukrainian Telegram news channels appeared to show a terminal and one tanker
ablaze at night. Reuters was not immediately able to verify the timing or
location of the images. Russian authorities said two foreign vessels had been
damaged in the attack on Tuapse, one of the biggest
oil terminals on the Black Sea, sparking a fire...

The United States has amassed
a major military presence near Venezuela, deploying around 16,000 personnel in
what analysts see as a possible prelude to expanded regional operations, The
Washington Post reported. According to the report, the force includes
approximately 10,000 soldiers and 6,000 sailors positioned across eight US Navy
warships, a special operations vessel, and a nuclear-powered submarine already
in the Caribbean. The aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford is expected to arrive
next week, bringing an additional three escort ships and more than 4,000
personnel. The buildup comes amid escalating rhetoric between Washington and
Caracas. The US has accused Venezuela of aiding “narcoterrorist”
groups and has imposed sweeping sanctions, while Venezuelan President Nicolás
Maduro has accused Washington of “fabricating a new war” to justify
intervention

prompting police to close the overpass and urge motorists and residents to

the time, emitted thick chemical-smelling smoke that forced nearby residents

claimed the life of one person in Parnell, Auckland. A bystander told legacy
media smoke coming from the fire was “difficult to breathe” and “the smell was
thick… it appeared to be plastic or chemical in nature. Fire crews from
Takapuna, Albany, and Greenhithe quickly contained the blaze, confirming all
occupants were safely evacuated. Auckland Transport closed the Constellation
