The History of the New Zealand Navy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G4haILPkqkw
“…and
thank you to everyone who has taken the time to join us online. I am now going
to attempt something quite difficult, namely to cover the story of the Navy in
New Zealand waters from Cook to the present day. That is a large undertaking,
and it inevitably requires a considerable number of slides. I will move through
them at a reasonable pace, as I do not wish to dwell on any single point for
too long. I am fully aware that no one could possibly cover every aspect of the
history of the Royal Navy—let alone the entire story of New Zealand naval
history—in a single PowerPoint presentation. If something is omitted, I
apologise in advance.
I
will begin at the most obvious place, which is, of course, with James
Cook—Lieutenant James Cook—aboard the barque Endeavour. This marked the
first known European contact since Abel Tasman in 1642. And naturally, the
first contact between the Navy and these waters involved a clash of cultures.
In recent years we have heard a great deal about the tragedies that occurred
during those early encounters. Nine Māori lost their lives at first
contact, and that is undeniably a tragedy.
However,
it is also necessary to consider events from Cook’s perspective. He was a
seaman, an explorer, and a cartographer, but he was also responsible for his
crew of sailors and Royal Marines. He was confronted by Māori who, at one
point, appeared to be attempting to seize his ‘floating island’ and who
challenged him directly. What was he to do? Clearly, he could not afford to
take excessive risks. He opened fire to protect his men, his ship, and his
mission. That was the reality of how such situations were handled at the time.
Cook
achieved an extraordinary amount using the simple technologies available to
him: the chronometer, the compass, the sextant, the telescope, and the lead
line. By far the most important of these was Harrison’s chronometer, which
enabled him to determine longitude. By modern standards this was a highly
uncertain and imprecise process, yet the results he achieved were remarkable.
Some of his charts did not require revision until the twentieth century, and
others were found to be entirely accurate even two hundred years after they
were made……

Storm Bram sea trials aboard Northeast Pilot III
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsEyt_FIkhw
Here’s a video
of recent Sea trials during ‘Storm Bram’ aboard the ‘all weather’ Interceptor
48 ‘Northeast Pilot III’ we built for the North East pilots at Newport, Rhode
Island in the USA. With winds of Storm Force 11 and heavy breaking waves
conditions were pretty wild, and proved a good test for her seakeeping
abilities, especially her stability where she recovered nicely from a hard 90
degree knock down. Also respect to the seamanship of the captain aboard Fokko
Ukena whom we filmed and accompanied as he bought her in through the entrance
of Cork Harbour in very challenging conditions...

Electric Boat receives new floating dry dock to support Columbia-class
submarines
The new
dry dock, designated “Atlas” was announced as received by General Dynamics
Electric Boat’s primary shipyard in Groton, Connecticut in a LinkedIn post on
January 4th. The primary purpose of Atlas is targeted towards supporting the
construction of the Columbia-class of Ballistic Missile Submarines (SSBN)
currently under construction. Atlas was constructed by Bollinger Shipyards in
Louisiana and completed the ~2,100 mile (3,380km) journey to Groton on January
3rd. The dry dock will be positioned directly next to the South Yard Assembly
Building, the primary structure where assembly of the Columbia class of
submarines takes place. As detailed by GD Electric Boat, the dry dock stands at
618 feet long, 90 feet tall, and maintains a width of 140 feet. Atlas will sit
60 feet above the adjacent deck (40% of the total height of the South Yard
Assembly Building), and can be aligned with either of the assembly bays when
required. When not in use, the dry dock will be moored closer to the shoreline
next to the building for storage...

At exactly 0417
local time, the southern Caribbean turned into a graveyard. Two Venezuelan Air
Force F-16As screamed across the water at 450 knots with a simple mission:
force the USS Jason Dunham to alter course. But somewhere between takeoff and
the 12 nautical mile mark, simple became suicidal. Captain Emilio Reyes pressed
the trigger and fired the first shot. The USS Jason Dunham answered with the
kind of overwhelming violence that turns fighter jets into scattered debris
fields. The entire engagement lasted 93 seconds. The outcome was never in
doubt...

South
Korea plans to send a containership through Arctic waters from Busan to
Rotterdam this September, marking its first concrete step toward opening a
faster northern trade route between Asia and Europe, the country’s acting
oceans minister said Monday. The government intends to deploy a 3,000-TEU
vessel on the trial voyage and support the construction of icebreakers and
other polar-class ships, Acting Oceans Minister Kim Sung-bum told a press
briefing, according to Yonhap News Agency. The announcement puts a firm
timeline on ambitions first outlined last August, when then-minister Chun
Jae-soo said South Korea would begin Arctic pilot operations “as soon as
possible” to avoid falling behind regional competitors...

RV- NZ
Defence Force - Antarctica is stunningly beautiful place but uh as we found out
it's also very remote very hostile and very very unforgiving at trials with the
first time in 40 years that the RN Zan's taken a ship into into Antarctic
Waters we got down as as far south as mcmow station which we believe is as far
south as any New Zealand naval ship has ever been we were also caught up in a
rather nasty little Ros sea storm that battered us for uh the better part of
two days and we were also involved uh in searching for Norwegian yacht the
berserk which found itself in distress in that situation unfortunately we
weren't able to get to them in time to to to help them out the storm we
experienced in the in the Ross sea was the first of the winter storms to come
through the area and from all accounts it was probably the the most severe in
20 years it produced uh icy cold winds up to 100 knots straight off the Ross
ice shelf and in conjunction with that the Seas Rose to 6 to 8 m and at times
10 m uh they were pretty violent and it's some of the most severe weather that
I've experienced in my 20 years in the Navy when you're caught in a storm like
that you you pretty much have to turn into it and and ride it out and that's
what we did we managed to to over 24-hour periods um just ride out these these
waves the ship handled it incredibly well it's designed to to operate in uh
those sort of conditions and uh its performance during those 24 hours proed
that it uh is more than capable of handing those conditions…

Europe - Nord Stream Pipeline Case Finally Explained…
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cj4d0Kq2LVk
On September 26,
2022, four explosions were recorded at the Nord Stream pipelines, damaging both
branches of Nord Stream 1 and one branch of Nord Stream 2. These pipelines,
which run along the bottom of the Baltic Sea and transport natural gas from
Russia to Germany, were out of service at the time of the attacks. Both NATO
countries and Russia suspect deliberate sabotage. Investigations by Danish,
Swedish, and German authorities are ongoing, but the perpetrators have not yet
been identified. Numerous conflicting theories exist regarding who is
responsible.
The explosions
were initially detected due to an unexpected loss of pressure in the pipelines.
The first detonation occurred at 2:03 a.m. in branch A of Nord Stream 2,
approximately 12 nautical miles southeast of the Danish island of Bornholm.
Three more explosions followed later that same day at 7:03 p.m. between
Bornholm and Öland, striking both sections of Nord Stream 1 and again section A
of Nord Stream 2. The damage to the pipelines was at a depth of 70 to 80
meters, and the leaks were located up to 40 nautical miles apart. The escaping
methane gas formed a foam on the water's surface for several days.
Seismological
analyses revealed that the explosions had a magnitude of 2.1 to 2.3 on the
Richter scale. German security authorities suspect that highly powerful
explosive devices with a yield of approximately 500 kilograms of TNT were used.
The attacks took
place in a geopolitically tense context, marked by the Russian invasion of
Ukraine and the ongoing discussions about Europe's energy supply. While the
pipelines were not operational at the time of the explosions, they were still
filled with natural gas under high pressure. The resulting methane leak caused
widespread environmental pollution. Experts estimate that the amount of methane
released is equivalent to a year's worth of emissions from a large city.
The methane
leaks posed a significant hazard to shipping, as the gas reduced the density of
the water. As a result, safety zones were established, restricting shipping and
air traffic.
The
investigation is focused on the cause of the explosions, with suspicion falling
on a state actor. There are indications that the explosives were attached to
the pipelines from the outside. German authorities are also pursuing leads from
possible Ukrainian perpetrators who are alleged to have transported explosives
on the sailing yacht "Andromeda." The investigations are ongoing, and
there are no conclusive findings yet.
Russia labeled
the incident "international terrorism" and called for an independent
investigation by the United Nations, which did not materialize. Sweden and
Denmark suspended their investigations in February 2024, with Sweden handing
over evidence to German authorities. China subsequently called for an
international investigation. The federal government refused to publish interim
results of the investigation, arguing that this would jeopardize the purpose of
the investigation…

Japan Tests Deep Seabed Mining of Rare-Earth Mud
https://www.marinelink.com/news/japan-tests-deep-seabed-mining-rareearth-533976
Japan
will conduct test mining of rare-earth-rich mud from the deep seabed off
Minamitori Island, some 1,900 kilometres (1,180 miles) southeast of Tokyo, from
January 11 to February 14, the head of the government-backed project said. The operation will mark the world's first
attempt to continuously lift rare-earth mud from a depth of around 6,000 meters
on to a vessel. Tokyo, like its Western
allies, is seeking to secure stable supplies of critical minerals as China, the
dominant supplier of rare earths, tightens export controls. "One of our missions is to build a
supply chain for domestically produced rare earths to ensure stable supply of
minerals essential to industry," Shoichi Ishii, program director of the
Cabinet Office's national platform for innovative ocean developments, told
reporters. The Japanese government is
pressing ahead with a national project as part of broader efforts to strengthen
maritime and economic security. The
January test will focus on connecting the deep-sea mining system and confirming
its ability to lift 350 metric tons of rare-earth mud per day. Environmental
impacts will be monitored both on board and on the seabed throughout the
operation.

Philippine Navy scrambles to shield vital undersea cables from spies
MANILA,
Philippines — The Philippine Navy is exploring ways to monitor subsea cables as
part of larger efforts to protect underwater infrastructure from sabotage and
spying. Numerous submarine cables crisscross the Philippines’ underwater
domain, including cables that connect Southeast Asia to the United States,
India and Hong Kong. Data that passes through these channels is vital for
economics, trade and communications. Navies across Southeast Asia have raised
concerns over cable-cutting incidents reported in the Taiwan Strait, the Red
Sea and the Baltic Sea. For Philippine authorities, the sheer volume of
reported incidents “exceeds the scope of accidents that are expected to be
natural or incidental,” said Nestor Gerico, deputy director general of the Philippines’
National Security Council. “These incidents are not random,” Gerico said.
“These are potential acts of aggression....

Trump
announces plans for new “Trump-class” battleships in major naval expansion
US President
Donald Trump has unveiled plans for a new class of battleships for the US Navy,
claiming the vessels will be the largest and most powerful ever built. Speaking
from his Mar-a-Lago estate during what the White House described as a major
announcement, Trump said he had approved the construction of two ships
initially, with the long-term goal of expanding the fleet to as many as 25.
Dubbed the “Trump-class,” the battleships are expected to be larger than the
World War II-era Iowa-class ships and equipped with advanced weapons including
hypersonic missiles, rail guns and laser systems. Trump said the first vessel
could be procured around 2030 as part of a broader naval expansion involving
both crewed and uncrewed ships. The announcement comes amid growing concern
within US defence circles that American shipbuilding capacity is lagging behind
China, as well as heightened naval activity in regions such as the Caribbean
and the Red Sea.

US
could get 32-megajoule railgun that kills missile at 6 times the speed of sound
Defense
contractor General Atomics is reviving its electromagnetic railgun technology
as part of a renewed US effort to build a nationwide air and missile defense
system, including reinforced defenses for Guam, according to company officials.
The California-based firm showcased railgun graphics at its booth during the
recent Association of the United States Army (AUSA) annual meeting in
Washington, DC Mike Rucker, head of weapons programs at General Atomics
Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS), told Naval News that the company has pitched
its long-dormant railgun system for the Pentagon’s “Golden Dome” missile
defense initiative...
AI
analysis: The MJ32 railgun projectiles reach speeds of
approximately 2,000 to 6,000 meters per second. To convert this to kilometers
per hour: 2,000 m/s is equivalent to 7,200 km/h. 6,000 m/s is equivalent to
21,600 km/h. Therefore, the MJ32 railgun projectiles reach speeds between 7,200
km/h and 21,600 km/h.
